THE long hard winter disappeared and heralded the much awaited cricket season with glorious weather in which to begin as winter sports sweated and spluttered to its elongated end.

Carlton Towers visited Scarborough in their opening match in Division Three of The York League and the long journey was rewarded with a haul of maximum points.

The home team won the toss and elected to put Towers into bat.

Jon Dilks was an early victim but Scarborough’s policy was shown to be a big mistake as Darren Graves (57) and Nigel Ling (42) posted a stand of 93 thus setting the stage for Mark Holmes (25), Neril Robinson (25 not out) and Oliver Lister (15 off 7 balls) leaving Graham Spence the task of securing maximum bonus points in the final over with 2 fours and a total of 200 for 7.

Despite his failure with the bat Jon Dilks roared in to open the bowling and at the end of his 11 over spell the home side were in disarray at 68 for 8and he had taken 4 for 40, he was ably assisted by skipper Mark Holmes 3 for 29 and Graham Spence 2 for 0 as Scarborough were dismissed for 90in the 27th over.

The fielding was of high order and Oliver Lister took three victims behind the stumps to make the journey all the more worthwhile.

Meanwhile back at at sun soaked Carlton the Seconds, a mixture of young and old under new leader Simon Boddye, had a promising start using a ball sponsored by RI Haw Milk reducing Bolton Percy to 114 for 7 thanks mainly to two wickets apiece for teenage bowler Jake Dawson (2 for 17), Josh Thornton (2 for 38) and an impressive 11 over spell 2 for 38 from Matthew Fenton.

Unfortunately Bolton’s later batsmen recovered to reach 195 for 8 at the end of their overs.

The hot weather had paid its toll on the senior batsmen and although only one player had a duck an all out score of 42 was not to be expected and one hopes not repeated.

The Club welcomes all to Junior Practice which will be held on Sunday mornings at 10am for Under 11s, 13s and 15s. Senior and Under 17s will practice on Tuesday evenings at 6.30pm. For more details contact Head Coach Nick Kline on 07967242244.
